New video software helps nab burglar

A 30-year-old Kohler man was charged today with burglarizing a VFW post after investigators used new video software to enhance security footage and identify him, according to a criminal complaint.

Leroy M. Godard, of 226 Woodland Court, faces up to 18.5 years in prison if convicted on felony counts of burglary and bail jumping.

According to a criminal complaint, Godard broke through a window to enter VFW Wolf-Olson Post 1230, 1138 Union Ave., about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 12. He ransacked the building but couldn’t find any money, and instead left with two cases of Coors Light, the complaint said.

Surveillance footage showed Godard entering the building and walking around inside, the complaint said.

Police then used VideoDetective, a $40,000 system paid for through a grant, to lighten and enhance the footage, allowing a police supervisor to recognize Godard. The system has been in use for about a month.

VIDEO REVIEWS: Five by William Powell and Myrna Loy

“You’ll turn my pretty head with your flattery,” dapper William Powell says to elegant Myrna Loy in “I Love You Again,” a 1940 screwball comedy. Replies Loy: “I’ve often wished I could turn your head — on a spit, over a slow fire.” Ouch! Their romantic repartee could sometimes turn acid, but in the 1930s and ’40s, William Powell and Myrna Loy were the most attractive and enviable romantic couple in the movies. The Loy/Powell chemistry was best displayed in the six “Thin Man” mysteries produced from 1934 to 1947, but the glamorous MGM contract players also appeared in another eight movies together, five of which are collected in the DVD box set “TCM Spotlight: Myrna Loy and William Powell Collection,” recently released by Warner Home Video. (The “TCM” stands for Turner Classic Movies.) The set begins with the feature that first paired Powell with Loy, “Manhattan Melodrama,” which is perhaps most famous (infamous?) as the movie that John Dillinger watched before he was gunned down outside the Biograph theater in Chicago on July 22, 1934. Directed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer stalwart W.S. Van Dyke, “Manhattan Melodrama” tends to be underrated because of the corniness of the premise, which already was cliched in 1934: Blackie (Clark Gable) and Jim (Powell), orphans and lifelong best friends, find themselves on opposite sides of the legal fence as adults, with Blackie one of New York’s top gangsters and Jim a crusading young district attorney. Loy plays sexy party girl Eleanor Packer, “the darling of after-dark,” according to the trailer, included on the DVD. The movie is entertaining from start to finish, cramming an unbelievable amount of action — and social and political relevance — into its first few scenes, as the young Jim and Blackie (played by a 14th-billed Mickey Rooney) lose their parents in a fire on a steamboat packed with ethnic immigrants, then lose their Jewish foster father under the hooves of a police horse when a Trotskyite starts a riot. In other words, the boys are orphaned twice in under 10 minutes! Next up is another Manhattan melodrama, the contrived “Evelyn Prentice” (also 1934). Directed by one William K. Howard, the film casts Loy as the unsatisfied wife of a job-obsessed lawyer (Powell). When she allows herself to be romanced by a “loathsome parasite” of a gigolo, murder follows. The set’s third film, “Double Wedding” (1937), directed by future “Jailhouse Rock” helmer Richard Thorpe, is the dog of the box, an annoyingly wacky tale of a free-spirited and irresponsible artist (the miscast Powell) who lives in a cluttered trailer home yet somehow melts the crust off a wealthy dress-shop owner (Loy) previously uninterested in men or marriage. Advertised in its trailer as “The movie with ‘Yumph’ ” (and how desperate was MGM to approve that campaign?), the film asks viewers not to notice that Powell’s jobless — and not particularly talented — “Bohemian” is a selfish clod whose antics should propel Loy toward a nunnery rather than the altar. Two wonderful screwball comedies complete the set: Van Dyke’s “I Love You Again” (1940) and Jack Conway’s “Love Crazy” (1941). “I Love You Again” plays against Powell’s Nick Charles persona by introducing him as a dull small-town businessman who drinks only “ginger ale and grape juice” until a knock on the noggin restores him to his long-lost “real” identity as a con artist. Even better is the sophisticated/slapstick “Love Crazy,” at least until the final act, when Powell’s cross-dressing Charley’s Aunt act drags (pun intended) the movie past the point of ridiculousness. As is typical of Warner Home Video releases, the box set is loaded with cartoons, shorts and other vintage material from the years when the movies made their debuts.By John Beifuss

Professional Photo and Video Software, Adapted and Priced for Amateurs

This week, Adobe is releasing overhauled Windows versions of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, the photo and video editing programs aimed at home users. While they cost $99 each or $149 for the pair, they are surprisingly similar to Photoshop CS3, the $649 image editor, and Premiere Pro CS3, a serious $799 video editing program.

With Photoshop Elements 6 for Windows, images can be spruced up using a guided step-by-step process. Tools from the high-priced version have been converted into simple improvement modes. A new tool lets you swap faces or whole bodies between group pictures, even those shot from different angles, for personnel substitutions in the style of the cold war Kremlin.

The finished work can be plain old pictures, slide shows, online galleries or a photo book printed by Kodak.

You can build complex productions in Premiere Elements 4 for Windows that combine video clips, pictures, music and themed templates (a rock concert is one). Up to 99 audio or video layers can be combined and synchronized to music. When it’s all wrapped up, you can upload the final cut straight to YouTube.
